Abstract
This study focused on low level of cortisol and observed the effect of aromatherapy on middle aged women whose salivary cortisol level was below 10pg/ml. The first experimental group was the massage group with jasmine oil and the second experimental group was the inhalation group with jasmine oil using aroma lamp. The control group was the massage group with jojoba oil. The study objects were treated twice a week for 4 weeks. The stress were measured before the experiment and after the last experiment. The salivary cortisol level was measured before the experiment, after the second week of experiment and after the last experiment. As for the massage group with jasmine oil, the salivary cortisol level increased significantly and the stress was relieved significantly. As for the inhalation group with jasmine oil, the salivary cortisol level increased significantly from the second week, but in the fourth week it decreased. And the stress was relieved significantly. It was supposed that jasmonoid of jasmine oil which signaled responses of stresses in plants stimulated the secretion of cortisol in human body. As for the massage group with jojoba oil, there was no significant change. Conclusively, the massage treatment with jasmine oil was effective for controlling the salivary cortisol level and relieving stress in middle aged women because of the synegy effect between the ingredient, "jasmonoid" and the application method, "massage."
